Description
SS Agar is a selective, differential medium used for the isolation of enterobacterial pathogens, primarily Salmonella and Singella, from food and other samples. On SS AGAR the beef extract and Balanced Peptone No. 1 provide nitrogen, vitamins, minerals and amino acids necessary for growth. Lactose when fermented provides carbon and energy. The mixture of Bile Salts No. 3, Sodium citrate and Brilliant Green inhibit Gram Positive (+) bacteria, most Coliforms and some Proteus spp. While allowing the growth of Salmonella spp. Neutral Red is the pH indicator. Sodium thiosulphate and Ferric citrate allow the detection of H2S producing bacteria, such as Proteus and some strains of Salmonella, as they produce colonies with black centers and a clear halo. Non-lactose-fermenting bacteria (presumed pathogens) produce clear colonies, transparent or colorless, while Coliforms are sufficiently inhibited and form small colonies varying from pink to red in color. This formulation is highly selective, and is not recommended for the primary isolation of Shigella. Some strains of Shigella spp. They may not
grow. It is available in a 100ml vial and is stored at 6-12?C.
